DSSC(Direct Short Service Commission) VS SSC(Short Service Combatant Commission) NIGERIAN ARMY.

People that are interested  joining the Nigeria Military after their bagging a Higher institution degree often get confused what is the real differences  between the two Recruitment  concepts.

The Short Service Combatant (SSC) and  Direct Regular Combatant (DRC) training usually takes 6 - 9 months approximately a year. Both programme are targeted at graduates of tertiary institutions who want to serve and further their current academic field in the military in which they are given positions in the ICT , educational fields amidst. many others.
Details of such commissions are to be found in the Harmonized Terms and Conditions of Service (TACOS) for officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces which is a classified document which is not opened to the general public as indicated on it as restricted, however  an hint can be deduced from the TACOS

Direct Short Service Course: DSSC is open to both civilians and serving military personnel. Only serving military personnel sponsored by any of the Services of the Nigerian Armed Forces to civil institutions are eligible to apply. It is  Usually  for fresh graduates and they are mostly needed at non-combat related jobs,

Duration: 1 year approximately

Training Location: Nigeria defence Academy, Kaduna

Service years: 15 years minimum

Hint: its good for those who want to taste what the military look like, you spend few years serving your fatherland, addition to your CV, then you get out of the military and go to explore other areas in life. The mistake many aspirants make is not checking the requirement before they become graduates, for example not all education degree are required in the Nigeria Army Navy and Air-force, so you need to start checking right from when you are school so you can know which area you are going to eventually go into or else apply for the RC (Regular Combatant Course) which may match your eligibility, taking RC(Regular Combatant course )means you have to leave your current school.Another Bonus - its not bad you start training your body personally after you graduate from the university to keep you fit and reduce the stress of coping in the anticipated rigorous military training, because of age range and the medical demands.

CONDITIONS OF SERVICE AS POSTED ON NIGERIA ARMY WEBSITE

Direct Short Service Commission will be granted for 15 years, for an initial period of 8 years, renewable yearly for another period of 7 years.  Direct Regular Commission may be granted on conversion after 3 years as a commissioned officer.

Conversion to Direct Regular Commission is not automatic. It is based on availability of vacancy and other criteria that are or will be in force from time to time.
All graduating officer cadets must sign an acceptance on the terms and conditions governing the Direct Short Service Commission before they are granted commission into the Nigerian Army.
Medical Consultants applicants on successful completion of military training shall be granted the rank of Major.
Applicants who successfully complete the military training shall be commissioned in the rank of Lieutenant.

Short Service Combatant (SSC) : This program also  require a University degree to be eligible but it is for they are most likely to be deployed to (artillery, intelligence, infantry) So as a SSC soldier you have to always compete with the soldiers that came in through Regular Combatant Course( A program for Senior Secondary school certificate holders spending 5 years in Nigeria defence academy bagging Bsc), the RC officers are quite younger than  most of them became officers at age 22/23/24 an average graduate of conventional university may be more than that age . The advantage of SSC over DSSC is that in the former are Likely to be promoted faster more than the latter because of their age and competencies.

Duration: 1 year approximately

Training Location: Nigeria defence Academy, Kaduna

Service years: 15 years minimum

Note that there are still some Rank that DSSC and SSC can't reach as an Officer except converted to Regular.
