Talking about Nigeria atmosphere In the 1970’s presumably under military rule, It very rare to see soldiers partaking in criminal activities, spare the rare ones for now. But now a days due to economic recession and financial demands from family issues men in uniform have now resort to involving themselves in obnoxious activities to generate more income thus forgetting their Purpose which they are called to act on. Thousands of civilian lives have been lost due to the quest of some men in in uniform that are trying to exhort money from civilians they accuse of transgressing against the law.
Dear reader if you are one of the bad eggs of any armed force or paramilitary and you participate in oppressing people due to your power then i want you to stop that now. I can vividly remember when i was 10 year old , i witness an incident while going to church with my Dad on a particular Sunday. We board a bus to church and then 2 minutes before we reached our destination, a group of police men on the highway stopped the vehicle and a short man in uniform with a Kalashnikov rifle hanging carelessly at his back . The police man barked at the bus-conductor and i heard him said: You no know say i go catch you today, shebi i stopped you that day say make you carry me you con tell me say you no fit carry staff today i don catch you so you no fit escape , Oya pay your tribute .
The bus conductor a muscular man like that off San Andreas wearing a dirty miami Jean alighted from the bus and then walked to the Short Policeman begging for mercy. As the drama unfold i watched with my little eyes as this muscular man that look like the green hulk begged before this short shabby policeman. He was being passed and jeered by other Police men and the driver too was not an exception, the vehcile key was seized and all the passengers were ordered to alight, and of course My Dad and i were part of the passengers. Judging with the scenario and the little martial movies i have watched then i knew that if a fight march was organized and the short police man was to fight the Bus-conductor without his gun or having any superiority with his uniform, the result will be that the short ass-hole will be beaten to plump. However as the policemen were demanding for money from the bus-conductor and his driver My dad walked up to them and went to show his Army I.D card to the superior officer in their patrol Van. After some chit-chats and blablabla the policemen bowed for my Dad request and the Bus-conductor was allowed to go without paying a dime (hmmn! That’s one of the privileges that come with being a military man). All the bus occupants thank my Dad and as the bus drove passed the policemen, the bus-conductor shouted into the air to the short policeman- “Baba just no sey, One day someday you will retire”
That is the key point there , If you think because of the position you are today you can oppress civilians or your junior ones, you just have to know that one day some day you will be armless with the governmental or coercive powers you have when you were once members of the armed forces will be no more What! Will you do and how will you live, YOU better think well so you can end well.
Another wrong perspective military aspirants have is that most of them believe when you join the Military they will be opportune to exercise an undareable power on civilians or weak entities. Most especially in Africa where everyone regards any military personnel as a hard-ass like a notorious cult member you should never come cross their paths or hold anything against them! C’mon Man! We are in the blissful era of Democracy where 6 stars can be whooped in the ass in the court of Law. However you can try reading this one of our article of stupid-misconception-civilians-have
I remembered one day while taking a walk with my friend we overheard three junior senior school students conversation which sound funny to me, The three of them were walking together and i then the one in the middle which seems to be talkative in nature said to his friends, don’t worry if Ifeanyi join navy, Ali join Army while me i join the airforce, i sear no one can find our trouble because we are going to show him pepper!!! The three friends laughed and agreed with a nod while i looked at my friend and then chuckled over what they said.
That’s a very wrong perspective or orientation.
In any armed forces of the world you are called to serve and protect not to be served and Oppress people, Many Nigerians complain of the highhandedness of military men and paramilitary men most especially their worst nemesis The Special Anti-Robbery squad (S.A.R.S). So many oppression on wrong people this group have performed and it has led to the #endsars campaign. However SARS can’t be ban because you will give those gun jones good time to rob the hell out of everyone, the same goes for all African countries where their security operatives exercise over-zealousness in their operation and in some way end up brutalizing the wrong people- helpless Civilian.
Much have been said we should serve not oppress, If you are a member of any country’s armed force i salute you! But just make sure you are not part of the bad eggs. Have a nice day.
Thanks for reading.
