Currently, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede serves as the acting Chief of Army Staff, following the untimely passing of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja. His death announced earlier today has left many Nigerians in shock.However there are other COAS that died while serving too.

Joseph Akahan (1967)
Joseph Akahan was appointed COAS at just 30, during the turbulent period of the Nigerian Civil War. Despite his youth, he took on his duties with a fierce sense of purpose, even visiting the frontlines in Nsukka to support his troops. Following a brief rest in his hometown of Gboko, Akahan set off to Makurdi, but tragedy struck when his helicopter crashed en route, taking his life and that of two other servicemen. His death was a tremendous blow to the army at a time when the nation’s future hung in the balance.
Ibrahim Attahiru (2021)
Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru’s appointment in January 2021 came at a crucial moment for Nigeria’s security. With his leadership came hope for stability, as the nation was facing heightened security concerns. Just months into his term, Attahiru’s life was cut short when his plane crashed while he was on an official mission from Abuja to Kaduna. The crash, caused by severe weather, killed Attahiru and 10 others, leaving the nation in shock. His death symbolized the ongoing risks that accompany military leadership, particularly during times of crisis.Taoreed Lagbaja (2024)
Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, an experienced military leader and alumnus of the U.S. Army War College, had a notable career before his appointment as COAS in 2023. His contributions spanned multiple internal security operations, such as Operation ZAKI, Lafiya Dole, and Operation Forest Sanity. Dedicated to improving security across various regions, Lagbaja passed away after a short illness on the 5th November 2024, less than a year into his service as COAS. and he is remembered for his unwavering commitment to service.
